Ronnie Pepper is the 2009 recipient of the Dispute Settlement Center’s
Peacemaker of the Year award.
Peacemaker of the Year is given each year to an individual who not only promotes
peace in his/her work at the Center but also does so in the greater community. We
are fortunate to be surrounded by so many wonderful peacemakers at the DSC, the
decision is never an easy one. We think you all will find this year's recipient is highly
deserving of this award and seems like a great fit for the 25th year anniversary
celebration.
Ronnie is a native of Hendersonville and has admirers in this community from ages
2-102. Walking down the street with him is like walking with the mayor or a celebrity,
at least five people are bound to drive by and yell out his name, always greeting him
with the same enthusiasm & joy he brings to others. He is the kind of person that
makes the world a better place just by being who he is.
Ronnie works with preschool children and teachers as director of the Head Start
program. In his spare time he volunteers with URI (United Religion Initiative), is a
member of the Lion's Club, deacon at First Baptist Church, board member of Blue
Ridge Health Center & My Place, on the Blue Ridge Community College's board of
trustees, assists at the Dispute Settlement Center with our Boy's Group, reads to
children at Bruce Drysdale Elementary School & teaches kids at the Boys & Girls Club.
Volunteer of the Year Award
Kathy Baluha is the recipient of the Dispute Settlement Center's 2009
Volunteer of the Year award.
This year we are honoring a person who has gone above and beyond reasonable
expectations of a volunteer and who always says yes. Kathy has been mediating with the
Dispute Settlement Center since 1993. She is a strong support person for us because she
is willing to mediate any case from community to family and assists us in Polk County as a
volunteer mediator.
